When Adulthood Came Along
The transition from childhood to adulthood
I was minding my own business when Adulthood came along,
Snatched me from the arms of Childhood, and said with him I did belong.
Childhood threw a tantrum, the worst fit you'd ever see.
Adulthood stared me in the face and said "Young lady, come with me."
He pointed across the way to a mysterious open door
While Childhood was still crying and pounding on the floor.
I couldn't help but to wonder where this door would lead to,
In order to find out, there was one thing I had to do.
I bravely stepped forward and accepted Adulthood's embrace,
And soon became dissatisfied with staying at my current place.
Just when I happily started off, headed toward the door,
Childhood grabbed me by the ankles (still crying on the floor.)
"If you go, I can't go with you. I have to stay right here,
And so do all the other little things you hold so dear.
Out there is a life nothing short of hard work, sweat, and toil.
Right here you can stay a child that we all can spoil."
I turned to see Adulthood; his face was rather stern.
He said, "Beyond this door is a lesson to be learned.
Beyond this door is the hope of owning true happiness,
Not the flimsy whims of foolish childishness.
Beyond this door is your future, the rest of your life,
A successful career, and becoming a wife.
But if you want to reach these goals, You must get ready now.
If you want to get there, I will show you how.
I know that you're not ready, you're only seventeen,
And I know that you're afraid of this door you'e never seen.
But you can't stay here forever; there's too much to be done.
You may like it here, but it's only just begun!"
After he had finished, not another word he said.
I contemplated on his words and began to nod my head.
I shook hands with dear Childhood, and gave one last goodbye.
I said that I would miss him with a small tear in my eye.
"You know I won't forget you. With you were my best days.
For the time we spent together, I give my God the praise."
After that I turned and started on my way,
Hand in hand with Adulthood to start a brand new day.
