What We Had is done

It was good while it lasted now the final curtain has closed

What We Had is done

Man, woman, sad-eyed grace,

what we had was ours, our place—

it was fun, it burned, it shone,

we had the sweet, we had excitement.

The sour came, we didn’t run,

we swallowed every drop, each one.

We danced through fire, through nights too long,

we laughed in storms, we sang our song.

You touched my hand like you knew the cost,

but we played bold, and we both lost.

We weren’t perfect, never tried,

just lived too loud, too much, too wide.

No blame, no shame, no final score,

just silence standing at the door.

Goodbye—

hush, don’t speak a word.

We’re crumbled now,

we’re dust, unheard—

the ash of what we used to be.

Goodbye to you. Goodbye to me
