What Was Meant for Me

A quiet story about accepting what life chooses to give and what it doesn’t.

Aamir sat on the rooftop, watching the city breathe under the fading orange sky.

Aamir sat quietly on the rooftop, the evening air heavy with the scent of rain. From up there, the city looked calm and balanced. Lights shimmered across the streets, people moved in their own rhythms, and for a moment it seemed like everyone had what they needed. But deep down, he knew that wasn’t true.

He had been running after things for years dreams, opportunities, people and somehow, they always slipped through his fingers. Every time he fell short, he blamed himself. Maybe he wasn’t lucky enough, or maybe he simply wasn’t good enough. It had become a quiet habit, the way he measured his worth by what he didn’t have.

That night, his mother came up to join him. She carried two cups of tea, sat beside him, and watched the sky turn from gold to gray. After a while, she said, almost like she was talking to herself, “You know, son, everyone gets what they’re meant to get. Nothing comes without a reason.”

Aamir looked at her, unsure how to respond. She smiled gently and added, “And remember, no one gets everything.” Then she stood up and went back downstairs, leaving her words behind like a soft echo.

He stayed there long after she was gone, thinking about what she said. He thought of his friend Farah, who had the career he wanted but constantly complained about loneliness. He thought of his cousin, who had never left their small town yet carried a peace that Aamir couldn’t seem to find anywhere.

Maybe, he thought, it wasn’t about how much we get, but about what fits us. Maybe life knew what it was doing, even when it didn’t make sense.

He looked down at his hands, the same hands that had built, failed, and tried again. They weren’t empty, just tired. But they still held effort, and maybe that was something worth keeping.

As the night deepened, the city lights flickered below him. He whispered to himself, “No one gets everything,” and for the first time, the words didn’t sting. They felt true, and somehow comforting.

In that quiet moment, Aamir finally stopped asking why things didn’t go his way. He realized that what he had was exactly what was meant for him and that was enough.
