What Silly Ol' Fred Said

Or, Smilin' at Nihlism

A gruff German thinker named Nietsche

Said, "Reason's got nothing to teach ya.

Religion's a sham.

Be your own super-man!"

But I think that's just overreach, ja?

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900), German existential philosopher and poet, profoundly influenced Western nihilism with the idea that meaning and morality in life are whatever we define them to be. He famously pronounced: "God is dead."

Here's another limerick I'd like to share with you!

About the Creator

Sonia Heidi Unruh

I love: my husband and children; all who claim me as family or friend; the first bite of chocolate; the last blue before sunset; solving puzzles; stroking cats; finding myself by writing; losing myself in reading; the Creator who is love.

Your pick of Nietsche is the best .

  • I like your limerick very much, especially using Nietzsche as your subject matter. When I try to read it aloud, however, the last line feels awkward to me, as though it's missing a syllable. When I replace "that's" with "that is" I find that it flows smoothly without changing the meaning. (First, I tried adding "his" before "overreach" but that restricts the overreach to Nietzsche instead of applying to all who embrace his idea of the "super-man.") The extra syllable in line 4 works just fine as a pickup beat so I had no difficulty with that. Anyway, that's just a thought. Great work! It takes me back to my seminary days when the graffiti in the bathrooms tended to be things like "John Locke" with an arrow pointing, well, you know, to the lock on the door.

  • Great job!

"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him." Therein lies the horror. Clever limerick and congratulations on your Top Story!

Quite an amusing rhyme for a very serious protagonist. Like someone else said in comments, it's whimsical and clever. Well done, jawohl!

Hehe, "Ja!" Sounds very Germanic. I think Nietsche wants us to not rely so much on outside forces So, we should use more common sense along with school courses We should all learn a bit from life Not everything's our fault that causes us a bit of strife Sometimes we overthink our knowledge sources
