When Enough Is Never Enough
What's the worst thing that could happen?
We land the dream job,
the one we thought would fill the void,
but soon we’re scrolling through listings again,
hunting for a better title,
a bigger paycheck.
We win the lottery,
buy the car that gleams like a promise,
but then the horizon calls,
and we convince ourselves
a sailboat is the answer.
We win the heart we chased for years,
the love we swore would be enough,
but suddenly, our eyes wander,
hungry for something new,
something more.
People can be insatiable,
always leaning forward,
always reaching past
the things they once dreamed of holding.
Perhaps the worst thing
is not wanting more,
but forgetting
to be still,
to be grateful
for what’s already ours....

Day 4 of Quitting
If this is how sobriety feels, maybe it’s better to go through life a little buzzed… this, along with other hits like, I want to kill myself, I wish I was dead, and I’m going to throw myself off a bridge have been the only thoughts on rotation these past few days. I promise myself that if, in a month, I still feel like this (‘this’ meaning despondent, full of rage, and simultaneously numb) I can go back to smoking. Until mid-February though? Nicotine is off the table.
