What Makes Me Think of You

a poem, an answer, a harsh truth

You asked what exactly makes me think of you as if I ever stop,

each moment a new reminder of your laugh, the way your body moves, your signature jokes.

The short answer is everything:

everything that has a memory of you attached

everything we've ever talked about

everything I encounter that you might like or love or hate

until your voice echoes in my mind, a phantom of what once was.

You deny the truth, pretend you never meant anything to me

like I could make this up,

and my heart breaks again — this time for you.

I know the reason for your dismissal;

you need to believe I would lie.

It softens the regret when you think of me too.
