What Lies Under the Surface

Some feelings you just can't shake

There’s an uneasiness I just can’t shake

It surfaces when I find myself alone

And everything is quiet and peaceful

And when I think I’d feel content

It sneaks in

Stealing my calm and quiet moments

Filling them with anxiety and despair

Disrupting the equilibrium I try to keep

I don’t get to decide when it comes or goes

I just wait

Eventually something else catches my attention

And I am free of this for a bit longer

Even still,

It never truly goes away, not for long

It sits in my stomach, a constant churning

And in my hands, as the slightest shake

In my head, distracting and disorienting

Always present

Sometimes it stays hidden for days

And I start to think everything’s okay

But even on my best days

There's an uneasiness I just can’t shake

I’m a poet at heart, always chasing the quiet moments and turning them into words. Most of what I write is poetry, but every now and then inspiration pulls me in new directions.
