What I Could Have Missed

Our fate is left in the hands of happenstance

The night's ritual ended as it always had before.

As my eyes fluttered closed so did my beating heart.

As my mind and flesh never opened true love's door;

nor felt his gazing eyes from our meeting's start

Ring! Broke the silence and my peaceful rest.

T'was a friend's familiar voice with a polite request

to attend a birthday party of a friend's friend.

Yes! I told them as I hurried to get dressed.

The thrill of a surprise felt like fate's kiss,

makes me wonder what I could have missed.

Excited chatter as we drove ourselves through,

passing nightwalkers on the empty moonlit street.

'Til what came behind but flashes of red and blue

Now threatens to prevent the story of you and me.

With a warning of a new tail light needed,

We caught our breath; feeling rather depleted.

The night was young and so were we,

If we stopped now we'd feel too cheated.

Onward quickly! We chose to persist.

Made me wonder what I would have missed.

Surely the rest of the ride will be smooth.

The stars will align for us once this night.

What else could come of this crescent moon?

When two souls are meant to feel love at first sight?

At last! We stepped foot into our party's scene!

Where my butterflies could surely be seen.

'Til I joined in with the happy strangers,

to melt them away with drinks in-between.

A stranger turned friend, sure will be bliss!

Makes me wonder what I could have missed.

Soon new friends took me outside to explore,

Where we first started a boozy game,

It was to you they led me to, Mi Amor.

And I felt love before I knew your name.

Emerald eyes like jewels just as deep and rare,

set off the richness of your midnight hair.

You were a king and I was not a queen.

Then why do they say in love all is fair?

Still, your smooth lips I'd easily have kissed.

Makes me wonder what I could have missed

From deep within, courage I did seem to find,

not a minute before this meeting.

To speak to those lips I wanted on mine,

and cherish this night that gave me this greeting.

Our love's brief encounter was cut too short.

More red and blue lights outside the front door.

Fear struck my heart! I had only a name!

Somehow, someway, there had to be more!

I'd never meet another man like this.

Makes me wonder what I could have missed.

Sheer panic sunk into my aching heart,

that this moment is all we had gotten to share.

And now for the rest of our days, we will part,

believing the notion that love is not fair.

One glance with my love cannot be my life's regret,

I wasn't born with this heart to feel such a fret!

My heart! Your very name led me down the right path!

A name only means nothing if it is spoken to Juliet.

Fate can be changed if you do so wish,

I will never wonder what I would have missed.
