What Could Have Been

What I wish had been

Heartbreak written on my face

Ink made of tears

Your hands to blame

Soft touch

Harsh grasp

Two blue eyes

Dark brown hair

A smile that wasn’t meant to last

A haunting laugh

A dreamer in bed

Surrounded by memories

And everything left unsaid

Hope drank like poison

Marks of touches

Done in passing

Glow red in the absence of the other

Empty conversations

Drawn out over hours

An impending feeling of doom impressing upon the soul

Sideway glances

Sentences stick to the rough of my mouth

A pleading frame

In the presence of one who is deaf to every utterance

Night after night

One head full of fantasies

The other full of dread

Silence

Has become too loud

The slamming of car doors echo throughout my body

Ups and downs

Turns taken so quick

Thrown out of my seat

Waiting for you to notice

Paint

Thrown around

Obscuring pictures that once seemed so innocent

Turning them into indescribable memories that should be thrown away

Rose bushes bloom

Even in the cold

But the thorns are not always worth the beauty of the petals upon its branches

Blood

Running from my veins

Dark and warm

Making stains on the frozen ground

A chasm between us

Shadows around us

A rope that neither wants to use

Staring at each other

Forgetting one another at the same pace we learned it

A distance wave

An unhearable whisper

“It could have been you”
