It's been over a year since the virus
descended upon us with a vengeance
everything's changed
offices closed, businesses shuttered, campuses empty
hospitals packed, long lines for free food
trigger happy cops, streets filled with protests
dying people gasping for oxygen
burial grounds running out of space
no firewood even to burn the dead!
I wonder if life ever be the same again?
The pandemic has caused us to pause and reflect
where has the seeming human infallibility gone?
the deceitful lies to hold on to the reigns of power
have you seen the state of our national discourse?
elected officials who have the gall to debate,
about the January 6 attack which took place in plain sight,
was it an act of insurrection or righteous indignation!
whatever happened to civility and courage?
mass shootings are no longer news
meanwhile fires and floods rage
the rich get richer, the poor be dammed.
The colors of hate abound
it is in the deep red of the confederate flag seen on Capitol Hill?
it is in the orange face of the chief instigator of the riots?
it is the white clenched fist of a young senator in a mad dash for power?
it is in the black boots of officer Chauvin?
it is in the yellow bear spray that killed officer Sicknick?
I want to know, what are the colors of love?
i don't even recall, can you tell me now
is it the dark black skin of George Floyd?
is it the purple blood of Brianna Taylor?
is it the crisp blue uniform of chief Medaria Arradondo?
is it the beautiful dark skin of George Flyod's little girl?
is it the rainbow from the tear from Darnella Fraizer's eyes?
or is it the white hair of a compassionate new American President?
As my mind wanders thru colors of a thousand hues
I can see the clear distinction
the colors may be the same
but its the intentions of the people who wear them
that give meaning to love or hate
