Weighted Blanket

a sonnet

By Justin KeelingPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
Runner-Up in The Sonnet of Shadows Challenge

For B

.

This weighted blanket you gave me lessens

the sting of light though it no longer holds

the scent you wore Christmas night, cut primrose.

Birthdays I missed hang between us, lightyears...

.

without wishes, questions, answers, lessons.

I miss your laughter and cinnamon toast

constellations of freckles on your nose

charted with twenty-two-thousand kisses...

.

I would stay with you in the court of dreams

if cruel dawn would leave me be in the folds

to sink into earth to search for your soul

but there is still this light you left in me—

.

seeping through the cracks and gaps that unfurl

to shed at last for this dark, starless world...
