We Meet At The Corner

An evil trade

By John WelfordPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

We meet at the corner of 40th and 8th.

I am buying a bagel—you are selling heroin.

Heroin is cheap.

It’s an evil that’s easy to get into.

Without me, you would have no one to sell it to.

I need it to feel good, to feel like me.

You would be nothing without me.

You are addicted to heroin like I’m addicted to feeling good.

I am a sinner, a sinner who knows God and is conscious of his sinfulness.

Is this what makes me evil?

To quote Montaigne:

There is scarcely a man clever enough

to know all the evil he does.
