We are all being stepped on

A poem about living in fear

I found a whole world in the cracks of the sidewalk

Tiny snails living whole lives under our feet

You said, "I can’t imagine living my whole life constantly afraid of being stepped on."

I said, "I can."

I can and I don’t think that the snails are afraid

The snails know death is a part of life

I think they concern themselves much more with the act of living

Than the fear of dying

They live in community with each other and the Earth

And they die the same way

Humans are afraid of being stepped on

Because we've been told we aren't supposed to live

Like the snails do

Humans are afraid of being stepped on

Because we are the only ones who can remove the boot from our necks
