We All Go Silent

11 o’clock.

We all go silent

Every man, woman and child

Around the UK, silence reigns

Just 2 minutes.

Noise only in our brains.

***

2 minutes.

Memories of too many

Our minds are whirring

But no people are stirring

Because we all went silent.

***

1 minute.

We’re all still silent

Across the country

With heads bowed and thoughts racing

And you may start to worry

Your silence is too loud

Everyone can hear your thoughts

But they can’t.

***

11:02.

The noise returns to the world

And people continue with their days.

Many won’t think of the day again until next year

But for some that silence means all.

***

Some lose family.

Some lose friends.

Some lose lovers.

Some lose kids.

But just for 2 minutes

The world remembers them all.

***

And so we remember them.

Mums, dads, brothers, sisters,

Wives, husbands and children.

Just for 2 minutes.

Just 1 day.

We all go silent.
