We spent the early summer together

As ones who did not want to separate,

Both of us wond'ring why we would never

Offer what the other wanted to take.

*

The summer's warm sun, soft breeze, and green grass

In unison smiled and whispered, "Yes, yes!"

But a harsh reality and cold laugh

Bred silence that created just a guess.

*

I took a step and said what I wanted,

You took a breath and said you wanted it too,

Then we blushed at how we'd felt so daunted

As summer began disappearing from view.

*

But by autumn's end, all our things were done

And we questioned the smile of summer's sun.
