We erased the memories
Not worth holding,
Covered with flower petals
And sprayed with faux rose scent,
Covering cracks in a story
We road along with,
Stuck in the passenger seat until
We cut the cord
And took the keys,
Learned to drive the bus
Holding assorted personalities
Watching flickering maps
Pressing gas pedal hard
Trying to hold onto the route
That we found best
At that moment in time,
Each head turn its image gades,
A 1990s sketch
Never meant to be permanent,
As fickle as the creator,
As unrelenting as the collection
Of voices stored within-
All intent on suppressing the moments
That created a work of art,
Steps towards the masterpiece before you-
A collection of events
That are best viewed
In daylight for understanding-
To keep demons at bay-
Best viewed without
The wallpaper we tacked
During those days
Where we aimed to be
Anyone else.
