Wall between two lovers

The only standing between them is a wall. But is the wall really a wall? Or is it something else?

Here I stand upright

in the middle of nowhere.

On either side,

a black void.

Where am I?

I see two people,

one on each side,

looking quite distraught.

They both look,

but I stretch on to infinity.

What am I?

They look at each other,

as if I didn’t exist.

Do I exist?

The man looks up,

but I tower to infinity.

The woman’s gaze follows his,

but the man lowers it and shakes his head in despair.

They both touch me.

I do exist,

but I am an obstacle.

I wish I could open up

and let them unite,

but I have no door.

Why must that be?

The man turns away,

the woman averts her gaze.

Why is he leaving?

He returns with a large object in his hand.

The woman gasps and walks back.

What is he doing?

He charges at me,

and I finally understand.

He rams and he rams,

but I’m too sturdy.

He drops to the ground,

tears in his face.

Where am I?

In a place of nonexistence.

What am I?

I am a force

that keeps them apart.

Do I exist?

I do not know.

I am an obstacle.

Why must that be?

I am a wall.

That’s all I am.
