Waiting for Rain on a Hot Summer Day
A Poem About Longing for Relief from the Heat

The sky hangs heavy, white with glare,
The sun a fire no shade can spare.
Each breath I take feels thick and slow,
The earth beneath begins to glow.
Leaves don’t rustle, birds don’t sing,
Stillness coats each living thing.
The roads are soft, the soil cracks wide—
Even time itself wants to hide.
We watch the clouds drift far, then near,
Hope rising with the thunder’s cheer.
A scent of rain rides on the air,
Promising cool, a brief repair.
Children pause with faces raised,
Eyes half-closed, a moment praised.
We dream of drops that kiss the skin,
And pray the storm will soon begin.
Then—finally—a whisper, a breeze,
A hint of wet upon the trees.
And when the first few raindrops fall,
Relief arrives for one and all.
