Vileous and Virtuous Vocables

For Paul's Most Favourite and Least Favourite Words Poetry Challenge

By Hannah MoorePublished 2 years ago 1 min read

This is for Paul Stewart's most and least favourite words challenge:

I like words that mound in the mouth,

That sit on the tongue like a velvet cloche,

Round and soft like hush, loam or south,

Undulant and smooth like butternut squash.

*

I like words that twinkle or rock,

With whimsical stylings like “synagogue”.

Or simple words that do not mock,

Like bond or stone, like bucket or fog.

*

Best, of course, are fun words to say,

Grumble and bubble share trophies in third,

Second place goes to Zimbabwe.

But Sausage prevails, both warm and absurd.

*

The counterpoint, at this rich feast,

Are abbreviants that then add flourish.

Like cutting the head off the beast,

To add an arse, as if that will nourish.

*

First up, let’s look at Holibobs,

Twice fie on thee wretch, to Hell I thee damn!

But hold, yet, those demonic mobs,

And loose them on those who say Famalam.

Sausage? That made me laugh If this was a Vocal challenge I think I would have just read the winning entry.

lol! This is wonderful and was so fun to read, Hannah! I have never heard those two distasteful words, and I hope I never do again. Great entry!

Oh wow. Never even heard of these words. Just seeing the challenge, looks like fun. I just learned a ton of weird words here. Oh wow! Famalam what?

You just had a wee bit of time to knock this out? FFS, Hannah. I shall quit quit quit haha. Joke. But, seriously...totally agree...I hate the term holibags which is like maybe similar to hollibobs? Someone I knew used to say hollibags in stead of holiday. lol. I love that you singled out sausage and Zimbabwe...I have always loved Zimbabwe because it just sounds so gooooooood lol. Thank you for your hilarious, slightly irreverent take on my challenge. Was a hoot, Hannah!

    Delightful, Hannah!

This is wonderful and, fortunately, I never heard anyone say famalam or hollibobs.

That first stanza, girl. WOW. "I like words that mound in the mouth, That sit on the tongue like a velvet cloche, Round and soft like hush, loam or south, Undulant and smooth like butternut squash." Perfect in every way, and especially love "undulant and sooth like butternut squash," which YES has exactly that pattern. Plus, how good a word is "undulant?" Your vocabulary is so fun!! Lol, I've never heard anyone say Holibobs. Is that a weird slang across the pond? And Famalam?? WTF? I 100% agree with your sentiment, though. Fie! Great entry! Puts mine to shame imo! Much more of a match of the brief. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

So funny. Are you expecting the famalam for the holibobs? Please don't damn me.
