VIllanelle: The Absurdity of War in the 21st Century

Why do we still have wars?

In a modern world, where progress stands,

Wars persist, in distant, foreign lands,

Unfair, the suffering from unseen hands.

Despite our claims, humanity expands,

Bearing witness to life's harsh demands -

In a modern world, where progress stands.

Absurd it seems, in these vast, wired strands.

Bitter truth, as history expands -

Unfair, the suffering from unseen hands.

Technological feats, yet blood-drenched sands,

Echoes of conflict, across time's strands,

In a modern world, where progress stands.

In the 21st century, a paradox withstands,

The ache of nations, in silent reprimands -

Unfair, the suffering from unseen hands.

Amidst advancements, peace escapes and disbands,

A plea for a world where compassion withstands -

In a modern world, where progress stands.

We will never be civilized as long as narcissists still expect, and are given the reins to rule. Civilization is a myth we tell ourselves to feel grand.

  • I don't and would never understand the need for war. Loved your Villanelle!
