Dear cluttered atmosphere,

What would it take

for your mind's eye to notice

the cavernous wake

of this war-torn lotus,

desperate as it is for the sun?

The mud, so opaque,

shields your perception

from the struggle, the stakes,

the mistakes and rejections.

Still, thy innocent will be done.

Ravaged roots rusting in relentless rain,

reaching their limit for commotion,

prevented from draining

their excess misery by your stark,

indifferent membrane.

How is one to abstain

from what reigns in one's environment?

Going whither it wills,

the torrent knows no retirement.

All must now bend their knees

in service to the storm.

Unless you, carefree air,

deign soon to adorn

your callous countenance with light,

flaying the bellies of foul thunderheads,

opening blissful interruptions in the mounting dread —

little windows to your massive, gentle soul.

Impregnable Sol,

unbroken but swallowed whole,

wallows, stolen from its subjects.

We diminutive things of green,

inconsequential leaflings, rarely seen

for we've yet been given

not much chance to grow.

Our dance is slow,

but intricate, its actors

are a supremely careful

syndicate of factors —

a most delicate balance!

And we require your talents

in their full and majestic variety,

not only this one

in crushing nimiety.

So please, sweet sky,

share with us all your powers.
