Unpacked

defining home: a poem

By Rhonda KayPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

In the rainforest

Inside the bromeliad

Insects never venture past those spiky leaves to roam.

Their whole lives

They have everything they want.

That single plant is their universe, their world, their home.

On the ocean

On the wing

Only the frigatebird and albatross drift days from nearest shore.

Well beyond the curve of earth

Wanderers, taking sleep in flight

Wind and water take them higher, farther than the day before.

Through time and space

Throughout the years

That I traveled nearly to the moon and back

Saharan sand, La Tour Eiffel

Suitcase full of starting over

So far I’ve come but finally home in the place where I unpacked.
