Unmasking the Demon

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished about 7 hours ago 2 min read

Verse 1

There’s a whisper in the world when the moon is hanging low,

Says the devil’s in the shadows where the wildness grows.

But I’ve learned the darkest creature ain’t the one beneath the hill—

It’s the voice inside that rises when you turn from divine will.

It’ll wear a thousand faces, it’ll swear it’s keeping you safe,

But it’s just your own reflection with a mask you didn’t make.

Chorus

Unmask the demon, see the truth beneath his will—

It ain’t claws, it ain’t fire, it’s your ego standing still.

It’s the last line of defense when your soul begins to yield,

When the light starts breaking in and the false self’s forced to kneel.

Unmask the demon, let the night wind have its fill—

You can’t follow God’s own voice till the ego’s ghost is killed.

Unmask the demon, see the truth beneath his will—

It ain’t claws, it ain’t fire, it’s your ego standing still.

Verse 2

I’ve walked the crooked ridges where the sinners go to hide,

Heard the stories of the hauntings folks keep buried deep inside.

But the scariest apparition ain’t the one that chills your bones—

It’s the pride that keeps you clinging to a kingdom you don’t own.

It’ll tell you you’re the victim, it’ll swear you’ve been betrayed,

But it’s just the fear of losing all the lies that you’ve obeyed.

Bridge

There’s a reckoning in the valley when the spirit starts to move,

And the shadows lose their power when the heart remembers truth.

You can fight it, you can curse it, you can run from what you feel,

But the demon only dies when you admit it wasn’t real.

Verse 3

So I’m laying down my weapons, all the stories I’ve rehearsed,

All the grudges, all the warnings, all the ways I claimed I’m cursed.

Let the river take the remnants of the self I tried to save—

Let the current drag the demon to its long‑awaited grave.

’Cause the only thing that haunts me is the part that won’t let go,

And the only way to free it is to bow my head and know…

Final Chorus

Unmask the demon, see the truth beneath his will—

It ain’t claws, it ain’t fire, it’s your ego standing still.

It’s the last line of defense when your soul begins to yield,

When the light starts breaking in and the false self’s forced to kneel.

Unmask the demon, let the night wind have its fill—

You can’t follow God’s own voice till the ego’s ghost is killed.

Unmask the demon, see the truth beneath his will—

It ain’t claws, it ain’t fire, it’s your ego standing still.

Outro

So let the lantern flicker low, let the ridge go quiet and still—

Tonight I face the demon…

And tomorrow, I follow will.
