Unmasked

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

A menu of distinct alternatives

Means of concealing the startling truth

Despite the many sweet superlatives

There is a void behind the mask, forsooth

Most will assume that, behind every role

There is an actor, solid and quite real

But just because there is a remote goal

That does not mean a seeker, full of zeal

Exists at all; some fleeting energy

Assumes a form and says and thinks and does

When all is said and thought and done, it’s free

Behind the mask, it could be, no one was

We assume that an essence lurks behind

Perhaps it is a figment of the mind

Ekphrastic

This had my mind spinning (in a good way)! Great though-provoking sonnet, D.J.!

We want to believe that thought lies behind actions, and not just rapacious appetites. Great job!
