United Shadows

a Haibun by Sam Harty

By ᔕᗩᗰ ᕼᗩᖇTYPublished 11 months ago Updated 11 months ago 1 min read

Shadows creep across parchment once bold,

Freedom's lamp light flickers, growing cold.

The words of our leaders, whispered low,

their echoes of injustice leave us

nowhere to go.

-=-=-=-

Rights once achieved, now slowly unwind,

Threads of liberty become fragile and blind.

Free speech muted, votes left uncounted,

Privacy shattered, freedom discounted.

-=-=-=-

Laws and rules rewritten, justice skewed awry,

Equality's flame snuffed out, hopes left denied.

Rights to some, privileges to few,

A nation founded on freedom – now unequal

to view.

-=-=-=-

How to count shadows

When all lights are growing dim

Freedoms at a whim.
