Unfinished Game
an attempt at a sonnet
Longing for a sweet kiss that never came
Your body so close, but I couldn’t move
Your lips—a siren—singing out my name
Fear froze me solid, and I lost my groove
I gave you a long look, a silent plea
Oh matters of the heart—they twist and turn
You misunderstood, and left me to be
Now I stand here alone and feel the burn
I retreat to darkness, my oldest friend,
Self-hatred coils and strangles like a vine
Worry now plagues me, you won’t come again
Tears fall steadily, and the fault’s all mine
My shattered heart is broken from regret
An unfinished game, a love not yet met

I was inspired by the line "Longing, we say, because desire if full of endless distances," from Robert Hass's poem Meditations at Lagunitas.
