A White Dress

That white cotton dress
blowing gently in the breeze
Has no recollection of the part, it played
Hanging there alone, on the line, as do I
Watching quietly as it lightly flutters
in the warm summer air
Sparks a memory of the first time I wore that dress.
The first time we met.
I was young, naive and trusting
The moon and stars watched on
as music seemed to play, out of nowhere
Those dreamy days of love and laughter
soon turned, as the clouds -
to red eyes and bruised knuckles
*
I can't help but wonder what life would be like
if I'd never bought that dress
If we’d never met.
But we did, and now, as I put that dress on for the last time
I realize...
We were just living unedited

Wow. That was really, really good. Well done, my friend.
There's always a quiet profundity to your poetry, Kelli and I'm glad to have the opportunity to read it. Another outstanding piece!
Insanely powerful, just like always. Your writing is just phenomenal!
So beautiful, so moving -- such a gentle poem, the violence comes as a shock. the line about putting on the dress for the last time seems ominous. And that profound last line!
Beautiful words for what looked like a wedding dress to me when dreams are to be happily ever after, but I guess things happen.
