Yes, I see that

I am Melissa, me, Melissa Renee Ingoldsby,

Born December 9th, 1990.

Melissa, to my mom, is a store called HoneyBees, where she found a purse with my name on it

And decided this is who her first daughter would be.

I sunk into my father’s house

Stealing his magazines

His class ring to show off to my friends at school,

To wear his button ups,

To be—-

What is it?

What am I?

Under my name,

My green eyes

Cover a dream

I’m telling

You

That no matter what

My name is,

Split in two,

I feel inside, always have, always will

Outside too—a longer process to see,

A dusky, smoky, river of masculinity

One of my favorite poems, “I’ve known Rivers,”

I feel like the muddy bosom of Mississippi,

Strong and deep, cannot be stopped or changed,

And I feel like “Matthew Warren”

Melissa to you, still,

In your heart I’ll never change,

Right?

"I feel inside, always have, always will Outside too" That's so painful. Thank you for writing this!
