Looking back on mom's life, this poem came to mind. It reminded me of how she lived, during and after.
TWO RINGS
Her life in a nutshell
()()()()()()()()()()
She was fourteen when they met,
And he stole away her heart.
With all their time together,
They were seldom seen apart.
The years passed by them quickly.
They agreed that they should wed.
The war began; things soon changed -
The Navy took him soon, instead.
On leave for just a weekend,
Not taking time to linger,
Before their friends and family,
His ring went on her finger.
Through the years the kids were born;
Her life was now complete.
Tears and fears and hardships,
She now had all of them beat.
The kids now grown and moved away -
Calmness, now a way of life,
They looked toward years together -
As a husband and a wife.
Still feeling like his new young bride,
With the ring from long ago,
Her heart was full, loving him,
And it set her eyes aglow.
Now she sits alone and stares
At the rings on upon her hand.
One she swore she’d never lose -
And the other – his gold band.
