Two Horses

January 9th

By Kalie P. Published 4 years ago 1 min read
Painting of horse in a stream by Nikolai Petrovich Bogdanov Belsky

I ate so many oranges I was sick

sometimes the things you love will

not always love you back

When two horses stare at each other

from either side of the barbed wire fence

one is trying to say

I love you

the other is trying not to die

hiding a broken leg

and it goes on about running in the field

even slowly

as if this will be its last ride on earth

our two heads bowed on a train

tumbling past the fields,

peeling oranges for each other

and feeling sick

watching the horses limp

saying nothing about it at all

watching in reverence

some broken legged mare seeing the world one

last time with hungry delight

we peel the rind slowly,

we split one last good meal

and won’t look at each other

and won’t look away
