Raised in pastoral quiet
I was the
Rainbow sheep in
A sea of white wool
Too used to too
Too loud
Too spirited
Too messy
Too distracted
Too girly
Too boyish
Too much
To quiet the discontent
towards my
presentation
I learned, I dyed
Teal to blue
Lime to yellow
Fuchsia to red
Simple & primary
Palatable to every palette
In a perfect portrait piece
Toned down & Muted
To fit the neighborhood society
But
Hidden leather-bound
Lines of black,
Page after page
Formed a different
Picture
Hellebore wild
In words I
Found
Beyond 152 hues
Magic made
From ink
That bled and bled and bled
Filling empty spaces
Until
Too became me became
I
Pen in hand
Ink stained & smiling
Painted
In every color
permanent, vibrant,
Spellbindingly Messy
finally
Free
