A Sonnet

Please do not fear an unusual tree

Some of us are rooted in the broad sky

Light and air preparing our food for free

While the natural order we defy

Probing the moist dirt with our rough limbs, strong

We learn our vital lessons in the dark

Feeling the earth sing its deep, silent song

Small, creeping things help us to forge our bark

Our fingers touch mineral mysteries

Branches bulge and brush secret, strange stones smooth

Inversion every bored prisoner frees

We find the truth in each crevice and groove

Heaven beneath and lithosphere above

We feast on clouds and turn hatred to love

Sonnet
