Trapped

A poem about what we hide within

I suppose

The real monster

Inside us all

Is the one that we trap

The snide remark we don’t say

The cutting look

All hidden

Behind a mask of calm

It is chained down with phrases

No worries

Its fine

It will all work out

The monster

is handcuffed in silence

Bound by the words we keep in

With bitten tongues

The feelings we extinguish

Suffocate it

Anger and injustice

Weigh it down

We don’t let it escape

For fear of what could happen

The consequences

Of it roaming unshackled

If it is released

Is that our true selves?

When it breaks out

Are we free?
