Transcending Today’s Hate
A Queer Message in the Sand

If I could transcend todays hate
with just one poem
I would write it, sing it, and send it soaring, like Mary Poppins, through the atmosphere
not a kite ‘cause this rainbow flag with a message would hang for the rest of the year
let it land on every beach everywhere
sparking a worldwide “hurray-we-are -gay” kind of cheer.
The poem I’d write with a big stick in hand
filmed from above for all the world to understand and read the writing in the sand
the message would demand to be seen
by all the listless eyes, forever scrolling their uninspired screens
would make my words impossible to ignore, be impossible to be unseen
I would have the floor and the ceiling and everything in between,
I would shutdown the hatred machine
save these drowning American’s, save this American Dream.
All the lesbian, trans, gay, Bi’s, questioning, inter-sex, asexual, and queer’s would here the music in their ears: you are loved and accepted in all the ways…
The message would read : What would we do without the gays?
Who will we be if we become all the same?
Until then, I will keep safe like all the other sad-outliers, transcendentalists and “magic-bean buyers”,
the midnight criers like good old Dr. Suess, who fought WWII from his writing booth,
armed with his political comics and a pen and the truth.
We too are the magic-ones with all the powers, who could turn all our problems into flowers.
I say, No parades until we are safe,
until that day we must be brave.
I am a two-spirit non-binary queer woman transcending the illusions of the patriarchy one poem at a time.
My message will bless those hearts
who walk that fine line
between life and death
stay alive, be with your breath.
Tomorrow will come and the times with change, like Bob-Dylan sang back in the day,
soon we will see things re-arrange
from domination to ruling the nation
we are not aliens we are God’s creation
and if you do not believe in God I understand, you are loved by the earth on which you stand.
Walk tall with your heads held high
but also be careful and keep a watchful eye and remember what Kermit the Frog always said,
“Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection, for lovers, for dreamers, and me”
