A poem

You say I should reach out more

But when is there ever enough time?

It’s in those moments of silence when I can finally breathe

That I can never find the words to speak

But I feel you around me whenever the wind blows

You are in every empty seat at every table,

The grass that sneaks through cracks in the pavement,

The soft warmth of my fingertips over the skin on my own shoulders,

The cold kiss from my dog’s nose.

And we both know that you already know

what I want to say.

And I know that you only want me to say it aloud

so I really hear what I think I mean.

Because it’s in these moments of quiet observation

when the fog is lifted and

where thoughts are lost to simpler notions,

that I am living in truth.

It’s in the simple, the sweet and pure

when I am closest to you.
