Time's Passage
Almost fitfully we’re pulled into the new year ahead,
Fireworks, a toast, a pinky promise said.
But there’s no guarantee that all will be well,
Things could be assured and still frightfully fail.
It’s a preponderance of that which approaches,
Whether expected or reflected or that which encroaches.
It’s the newness that keeps us at bay,
Not knowing or seeing or hearing it our way.
Our world is set to change, to become new,
And there will be points that are different, points askew.
We need to consider this transition that we will see,
And prepare as we can for the experiences that will be.
There is no telling what changes will require of us,
And that’s what terrifies, petrifies, and requires guts.
Facing the coming minutes, the hours, and the days,
Will cost some more than just their attention, some may slay.
The new day, the new year approaches, and declares.
That time doesn’t stand still in its minutes or hours.
But hidden in time in which we must exist,
Are the threads attached to memories we can’t resist?
Do we actually create experiences as time passes by,
Or do we assume the positions assigned us, one predestined to die?
Not in some imaginary world or cosmos far from reality,
But here in this ticking unraveling clock, we face uncertainty.
If foresight is what we needed to have,
Then why keep things secret like an ointment or salve?
For us to embrace that which lies ahead,
We’ll need to understand where we are being led.
No uncovering to see behind the veil, to see it in plain sight,
Is that what keeps us going, our fight to understand life?
Heretofore, there have been no answers to this question,
But it’s assumed the answer is provided at life and death’s intersection.
