Who Do They Think They Are?

They tell me who to be,

They never let me be me.

They try to speak in my voice

They never let me make a choice.

They accused me of telling lies,

At a time when I wanted to die;

They never heard me cry.

They abandoned me!

At a time when I needed them most;

They left me, lost in my own tears,

For over twenty years.

And now.

They come to me,

Begging me to be there,

But when I needed them most,

They never showed me they cared!

They wonder why I walked away,

Why I took a different path;

Why I won't shed a tear,

For all of those lost years.

They don't seem to understand,

My life is better without them;

I have taken a different turn,

To reach those goals I yearn.

They don't like me building a new life,

Free from their pain and strife.

But this path I must travel,

And let my light shine,

Guiding me to the beauty that is mine.
