There's A Mouse In The House
Inspired by a true story, this funny little poem is intended for a children's book series

It happened in the broad daylight
A scratching sound I heard,
I couldn’t quite distinguish it,
So I uttered, not a word.
At first I thought it in the wall,
Then under the kitchen sink,
Scratching in the living room,
What was I to think?
I started pounding on the wall
Each time I heard that sound,
But when I did, the noise would stop,
I heard it run around.
I wondered to the living room,
To dust the three end tables,
To my surprise, from the edge of my eye,
Ran a mouse on the tv cable!
I screamed out loud, I jumped around,
Then leaped upon a chair,
Nan ran in to check on me,
"A mouse is over there!"
She laughed out loud, and stood real still,
She waited, and then it moved,
She made a scream, ran out the door,
Nana found her groove.
She came back with a broom in hand
Intending to chase the mouse,
But every time she swung at it
She’d end up hitting the house.
I laughed at her from high in the air,
Her aim was really bad
She jumped onto a chair as well,
Her face was rather sad.
We saw the mouse run down the hall
And into the closet it went,
We all were very quiet
And our nerves were rather spent.
I mustered up some courage
And opened the closet door,
I used my mini flashlight
To check the closet floor.
I couldn’t seem to find the mouse,
We both knew it was there,
So I started moving things around
In hopes of finding where.
Suddenly I heard a noise
Inside the vacuum hose,
I flicked it with my fingers
Then I moved it with my toes.
I grasped the hose in both my hands
And shook it all around
But that little mouse was holding on
And never touched the ground.
I took the vacuum to the porch,
And there the mouse ran out,
Then Nan and me went back inside
With a tale to laugh about.
