The World Is Too Loud
For one that doesn’t fit

She flourishes in the darkened void,
The only place in which she truly belongs,
Alone within her living destiny,
Banished, forever shrouded; cloaked under her many wrongs.
**
The world outside one ill-suited,
An outcast, a social misfit,
Withered from the constant denial, consistently unworthy,
Cowering in silence, hallowed shoulders weary under the heaviness of where the mantle sits.
**
She’s accepted her fate,
Found peace out in the backwaters, content in her solitude,
Aware of her limited capacity, her heavy burden to bear,
Veiled from eyes seeking to prove and preclude.
**
Her skin is thin, it doesn’t have the ability to shield the truth,
Pretence shrouding the mask she’s always worn,
Her greatest fear of becoming uncovered,
To reveal a soul shattered and forever torn.
**
A broken shell of functionality,
A mistress of disguise, tired of the face lifted to the world on show,
Forever wandering, unbidden to overstay her welcome,
To forfeit the weakness she doesn’t want the world to know.
**
So, why reach across the centuries now?
When she has not existed in that world for so many years,
She didn’t fit then, so why think she’ll fit now?
Words that should have once been spoken — it’s too late! She no longer wants to hear.
**
She cannot be fixed,
Not after being cast aside and killed,
She cannot understand why anyone would attempt to breach the chasm,
Especially by those that burned the bridge and destroyed a little girl’s will.
**
She cannot survive outside her solitude,
She no longer has the capacity to be a part of a whole,
Not when it has become the destroyer of peace,
In a world that broke her down and took its toll.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This was so sad but it's often the reality for many. Loved your poem!
Such a powerful statement, especially the end. When society abuses and discards so many, why would they even want to attempt to participate in keeping it working? Great piece.
Layered and rich in character. The world sure is noisy and can be a challenge to function in. The “part of a whole” line - felt that. And yet maybe sometimes solitude is required. Best ☺️
