The Weight of Unspoken Words

What we leave unsaid can echo louder than any sound.

The Weight of Unspoken Words

There’s a silence that hums beneath the skin,

A quiet ache that no one sees.

It lives in pauses, half-formed thoughts,

And lingers in the spaces between "please" and "don’t leave."

I almost told you—once or twice—

When the room was still and soft with light.

But fear is a stubborn, heavy guest,

And courage came too late at night.

I’ve carried lines like folded notes,

Unsent letters pressed in drawers,

Each one a truth I couldn’t voice,

Each one a closed, invisible door.

You smiled, not knowing what I meant

When I laughed a little too fast,

When I looked away too long,

Wishing the moment would hold, not pass.

I said “I’m fine” when I wasn’t.

Said “It’s nothing” when it was.

I built a wall of quiet kindness,

Hoping you might guess because…

Because it’s hard to speak when the heart is full,

When the risk is more than the gain.

But silence isn’t mercy,

When it only deepens the pain.

If I could go back, I’d whisper them all—

Every word I left unsaid.

Because even if it changed nothing,

At least the silence wouldn’t spread.

So if you feel something, say it.

Let the truth find its voice and form.

Unspoken words weigh more than steel,

But spoken ones can keep us warm.
