The Weather

In the Relationship Shallow

By Karen LaRuePublished 4 years ago 1 min read

The weather

Your only comfortable topic of conversation

I was resentful

But I didn't understand

Beyond the narrow religious platitudes that rule your life

There is nothing there

You live in an emptiness

That spans the time between life and death

You live

To die

The promise of forever is your lifetime hope

But in that hope

You are missing life

Within the gray uncertainties

And the messy mistakes

And my life outside your lines

I have found something more than hope

My life has color

Texture

Flavor

It is oh so deep and wonderful

You don't have that

Our conversations are shallow

Because your life is so shallow

An endless devotion

To the time when it is no more

I am no longer resentful

But I am sad

Though you may talk about the sunshine

You never really feel its warmth

For me

I choose to run in the rain
