The Universe’s Nocturnal Hours

Necessary to re-boot and re-charge

The universal clock is silently ticking over

As the night hours slowly turn into morning,

Almost three am on a dark moonless night

Although there will be a new day dawning.

***

The nighttime outside world is deadly silent

Although the same is true here, on the inside,

The only sound, a constant ringing in my ears

Is what breaks the harsh silence open wide.

***

You would find yourself forgiven in a heartbeat

If you were somehow convinced you were alone,

The dark, the early hours, the silence, the stillness

All assist in driving that very message home.

***

But wait, look out the window, what do you see

There, that little glimmer of hope and peace,

A solo light shines in the house over the road

And you then let out a deep sigh in sheer relief.

***

Out of the blue, the sound of a voice carries to you

Gently floating and swaying on tonight’s wispy breeze,

Turns into a loud yell, followed by crude language

Harsh unnecessary noises that once again relieves.

***

Suddenly a solo bird lets out a musical trill

Next thing you know a musical band starts,

Nature playing, totally carefree in its element

The beat of a possum’s feet playing a part.

***

Synchronicity, each beat, every natural tone

Harmonises with each animal’s unique sound,

A trill, a hoot, drumming of feet, clicking of beak

A plane in the sky, a car travelling the ground.

***

Each tone, including the ringing in my ears

A slight wispy breeze, carries nature’s song

The greatest musical masterpiece around,

Swooping and dancing as it breezes along.

***

The balmy night air slides against your skin

Not noticeable at any other time of the day,

Those last few darkened morning hours

Causes sensory calmness to come into play.

***

It is at that three am, that early morning hour

That your mind can wander gently along,

Quiet whispers of a lingering past and present

Leading into meandering thoughts that belong.

***

Ideas and plans for the future slip in midstream

Blending and merging with today’s thoughts,

Manifesting your tomorrow’s, your dreams

Into existence, experiences and lessons taught.

***

I will be totally exhausted all day tomorrow

Due to the lack of sleep in these early hours,

But the calming silence and peaceful darkness

Please don’t underestimate nature’s powers.

***

Once a week I’ll awaken in the darkest hours

And I know I need a cleanse and toxic discharge,

The emotional battery reservoir almost depleted

The night hours needed to reboot and recharge.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This one hit me on an emotional level. I felt such a yearning to hear that synchronicity if sound and hear it as music. Thank you... This is beautiful.
