The Uncertainty Of A New Day

Endless possibilities

He watches the sun rise over the horizon,

Waiting for the heavy warmth of dawn,

He can’t help but ponder the uncertainty, the possibilities,

The destiny into which he has been born.

******

Today may bring heartache, joy, miracles or even boredom,

The options endless and the knowledge just out of his reach,

It’s days like today that hold his best memories,

Days of unexpected love, laughter, hysterical tears — sent to teach.

******

His heart is full and he’ll accept his worth,

He’ll saviour the gift sent his way,

Trusting the universe won’t give him more than he can handle,

And he’ll reminisce at the end of the day.

******

He holds his hopes and dreams tightly to his chest,

Praying he’ll receive some semblance to help him smile,

Wishing for a cooling breeze to dry his brow,

A smile from the one he loves and a decision to stay awhile.

******

His heart beats to its own drum rhythm,

Loudly reaching across a span of years,

Decades in fact; many wasted minutes,

As his face expresses the passage of his painful tears.

******

Today is a new day,

Today he hopes his patience has won the race,

A simple buzz of a phone, a message of love,

Allowing his smile to once more grace his face.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
