The Trio

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 5 months ago 1 min read
Odd Nerdrum, “The Singers,” 1984

Each of these odd voices sings about time

Past, present and future supply their themes

The first, a historian, eschews rhyme

Our present, his past, spoke only in memes

Strange is the second singer's dark present

Arid and absurd, it might await us

Organic intelligence might prevent

The AI spawned disasters he'll discuss

When the third voice sings about the future

He does so in a tongue both fresh and old

Many believe he drifts through a stupor

To some ears, some stories cannot be told

Laugh not at their ridiculous garments

Attend instead to their dreams and regrets

Ekphrastic
