The Symphony of Seeds: A Performance Poem on the History of Agriculture
Poet
Part I: Dawn of the Seed
In the beginning, when earth was wild and wide,
Human hands were empty, yet yearning, inside.
They wandered the wilderness, hunters in stride,
Till one found a seed, and with it, pride.
In Mesopotamia’s fertile crescent’s grace,
The Sumerians planted, the first of their race.
With barley and wheat, they tilled and they sowed,
The cradle of civilization, in the rivers flowed.
Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
Part II: The Golden Grains of Antiquity
Ancient Egypt, with the Nile's timely rise,
Turned deserts to gardens under clear skies.
With shadoofs and canals, the waters did glide,
In the land of Pharaohs, the grains did abide.
The Chinese, with rice paddies’ watery beds,
Fed their great dynasties, with harvests widespread.
From the terraces of Asia, to India’s plains,
Grew the cultures and customs, by the labor of grains.
Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
Part III: The New World’s Bounty
Across the Atlantic, where the sun met the sea,
The Aztecs and Mayans raised maize with glee.
Cornfields stretched wide, under the blue,
With beans and squash, the “Three Sisters” grew.
In the Andes’ high terraces, potatoes took root,
With quinoa, the Inca’s most sacred fruit.
North America’s tribes, with tobacco and corn,
Wove agriculture into traditions, newly born.
Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
Part IV: The Age of Exploration and Exchange
The ships from Europe set sail with greed,
For spices and silk, their hearts did plead.
But what they discovered, on distant shores,
Were crops and treasures, opening new doors.
Tomatoes, potatoes, and maize made the trip,
As did wheat and horses, via the ship.
A Columbian exchange, of flora and fare,
Transforming the world, with the seeds they did share.
Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
Part V: The Industrial Revolution
Then came the era, of steam and machine,
Where fields became factories, vast and serene.
The reapers and plows, turned by the hand,
Now powered by engines, shaping the land.
Chemical fertilizers, the promise of more,
Feeding the masses, the yield to soar.
Yet with this progress, came questions to heed,
Of sustainability, and the world’s need.
Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
Part VI: The Green Revolution
In the mid-20th century, a new dawn broke,
With Borlaug’s wheat, a billion hearts awoke.
Hybrid seeds and pesticides, a bountiful trend,
To hunger and famine, they sought an end.
Yet monocultures spread, biodiversity waned,
And the call for balance, by nature proclaimed.
For organic and local, voices did cry,
To nurture the earth, and not let it die.
Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
Part VII: The Future of Farming
Now, as we stand on the edge of tomorrow,
With climate and change, bringing joy and sorrow.
Vertical farms and CRISPR’s gene might,
Promise a future, both bright and right.
But let us remember, in our quest for yield,
The wisdom of ages, our ancestors’ field.
For in every seed, a story is spun,
Of earth and of sky, of moon and sun.
Final Chorus:
Seeds of the past, we honor thee,
Roots deep in time, branches to be.
From humble grains to fields so grand,
The story of earth, told by the land.
In the hands of a farmer, the future we mold,
With respect for the past, and visions bold.
For the story of agriculture, eternal and grand,
Is the story of humanity, and our bond with the land.
