The Summoning

It will work, all too well I'm afraid

Want to disappear?

Not a problem.

First, dye your skin a darker color.

Water soaked in walnut hulls works a treat.

Then, change your name.

If you can.

So much sensitivity about changed names, have you noticed?

I suggest an ethnic last name, something Latino or Asian.

Or African. That will be quite effective.

That should be enough to get the attention

Of the cold-as-ice whackjobs

Who are so tough they hide their faces.

Start speaking up

About social issues, and feeding the poor.

Dress in rainbows

And go to a Pride parade.

Make social media posts

About protecting the helpless.

Soon, very soon,

The Faceless Cold Ones

Will appear at your door

Like the harbinger of a winter

With no end in sight.

Or on the street.

Or at work.

It doesn’t matter.

But you will vanish.

It is very effective.

It will be as if you never were.

And we who are left behind

Who still have hearts

Will mourn your disappearance.
