The Submissiveness of Sheep

By © Angela Goldsmith

By Angela Goldsmith Author @WaterstonesPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

A woman begs for money outside the large supermarket

And the neon opulence provides

A blunt counterpoint

To the lack of empathy and scarcity of compassion

Divined by those who govern here

Whose who have a duty,

To create a chain of choices

These fortunate few

Advantaged by accident of circumstance

Oft capped in common garb

A camouflage, to conceal

The appropriation of the imperious

Heads anointed with a gaudy token

Whose clout mandates cruelty

To benefit self-interest

They serve only to stoke elected division

The segregation of high and lowly

Aided by the compliant

Is it a talent to make people complicit in their own downfall?

This design trickles down to the willing

And the consequences are both stark and startling

social commentary
