The Story of You

A Poem

I watch you. I always have.

I don't know if I really see you for who you are, but I see all your pieces.

The broken and the jagged,

The smooth and the gentle.

I wish you could hear me when I say "I love you as you."

Not for what you can do or who you could be.

I love your loyalty. your honesty, your way of looking at the world, even if it is black and white with no room for grey.

We've grown together over the years, changing in ways I would never have imagined.

We have a son and a daughter; intelligent and kind, often sneaky and mischievous, and so very full of love for us and each other.

Life wasn't kind to you. It broke a lot of things. It carried a lot of sadness and guilt and anger.

But you're here. You made it through.

Yes, there's a long road still ahead, and right now, things are tough.

But believe me when I say to you, that if you saw you, as I do, you might be kinder to yourself too.
