The Storm

A free verse poem for thundering introspection

I fear the storm

To stare at the horizon

And see the looming wall of rain

Beneath gray foreboding clouds

I fear the storm

To watch the flash of distant lightning

And feel the peal of feral thunder

Against the darkening furtive sky

I fear the storm

As the fickle winds shift

And the first drops of rain greet my brow

And the breeze whispers its impending call

I fear the storm

The thumping and bumping of my heart

As I run for safest shelter

With the deluge close at my heels

I fear the storm

To hear the furious patter of the rain

And howling whistling gale

Against the roof of my feeble haven

I fear the storm

To watch the lightning crash in twos and threes

To stay silent and awestruck

At indominable fury manifest

--

The rain flees

The gale dies

And the lightning bids adieu

I leave my shelter to see skies of blue

And embrace the welcome of sweetest petrichor

At once to realize

-All too late-

I miss the storm

"Feral thunder" is so visceral. Nicely done!
