The Sound of Violence

A Song Personified

By Earl W. PearlPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read

Hello conscience, my old friend

You've come to talk with me again

I see a vision of you here weeping

A premonition while I’m here sleeping

And the vision, I envision in my dream

My brain retains

I am the sound of violence

You’ve come to ask me to atone

For making streets a danger zone

I'm the darkness that outshines your lamp

You tried to reach me, I removed the ramp

Then my eyes were blinded by a flash that was

beyond bright

I saw the light

I hate the sound of violence

From in my vision there’s a roar

Some billion people, maybe more

People found the peace they’d been seeking

People without voice were now speaking

People righting wrongs who typically

wouldn't care

No one would dare

Challenge the sound of violence

“Rules,” said I, “It's time you know”

Violence like a cancer grows

Take my hand that I might reach you

Lend an ear so I might teach you

But my pleas, like toxic raindrops fell

And collected

In the wells of violence

With graffiti, walls were sprayed

Neighbor’s businesses betrayed

The message in the clouds forming

Came rumbling with a loud warning

And the message was “The profits you make

looting will make you all fall”

Condemning you all

When captured

In the sound of violence
